An I-Pass is available for $50. In addition to the base price, there is a $10 refundable security deposit and $40 in pre-paid tolls included. Customers can also sign up for automatic replenishment, which means that when the account balance falls below $10, another $40 is automatically charged to a credit card and deposited to the I-Pass account, saving them time and money.
People who do not want to have the automatic replenishment option can do so by paying a $20 security deposit.
In either case, having an I-Pass means you’re tying up money. If you frequently use the tollway system, it is obvious that you should have one of these cards.
How to Mount Your I-PASS
Step 1
Make sure that the inside of your windshield is clean, dry and warm
Step 2
With the arrows of the transponder pointing toward the roof, align the transponder on the windshield behind the rearview mirror, at least one inch below the metal roofline and one inch to the right or left of the mirror post
Step 3
Remove the plastic backing tape from the mounting strips and firmly press the transponder against the glass for 15 seconds
Activate it!!
Transponders obtained at Jewel-Osco or Road Ranger locations must be activated before use. Call 1-800-926- 6500 or activate online at www.illinoistollway.com. Be prepared to provide the I-PASS serial number and activation code, located on the activation sticker on your transponder. Transponders obtained at a Tollway Customer Service Center are already activated
Even occasional users, according to Joelle McGinnis, press secretary for the Illinois Tollway System, will benefit from the system because they will save the trouble of fumbling with cash or fretting about missing the toll basket. Drivers do not need to stop at toll booths equipped with special I-Pass lanes, though they may need to slow down in some cases.
Furthermore, you will not lose any money that is not utilised.
“Money remains in your account until it is spent,” McGinnis explained.
If you choose to return an I-Pass, your deposit, as well as any remaining funds in your account, will be refunded.

How does it work?
The little white box that you attach to your windshield behind your rearview mirror is a transponder. This transponder communicates through radio signals with the toll plazas as you drive through them. Account information is sent back and forth between your transponder and the plaza and your prepaid toll balance is debited. The transponder can be moved between vehicles, although each vehicle must be registered for that transponder.
I-Pass users can use any lane at a tollbooth, although many tollbooths have specific lanes that don’t require drivers to stop – although in some cases drivers need to slow down.
What if I go through an I-Pass lane without an I-Pass?
It’s a toll violation that carries a $20 fine, plus the cost of the toll.
How do tollway officials know how to track down offenders?
The I-Pass lanes have cameras that snaps a picture of a violator’s cars and license plate. If you accidentally drive through an I-Pass lane, you still can make arrangements to pay the toll by calling (800) 241-0112.
